Staddle stones have been used as Garden Antiques since the 1920's, often they are referred to as - staddles, rick stones toadstools or mushrooms.

Over 200 years ago Staddlestones would have been hand made from the local stone, quite simply to support agricultural buildings such as granaries, raising them some two feet or so off the ground in an attempt to prevent vermin and water from reaching the stores.

Reclaimed Original Antique Staddle Stones are In stock available For delivery worldwide

Each area of the UK has its own unique seam of stone; this is the reason that we have varying colours of Staddlestones. Often is the case that we find a staddlestones 'away from its natural home' it is UKAA's mission to return the Staddle back to its origin.

Each Staddle stone that we have will have been hand carved by the local stone mason or it was a job that was given to the farm labourer.

Today Staddle stones make wonderful garden ornaments and look stunning lining a drive way.

More Information On Staddle Stones

Staddle Stones

Originally used as supporting bases for granaries, hayricks and game larders - staddle stones were carved from local stone by stone masons. An important job in years gone by, staddle stones were not for ornamental use like they are today.

The stones lifted the granaries above the ground to protect the stored grain from vermin and water seepage. This was an innovative design as the vermin could not get over the lip of the top of the staddle stone. The top was separate from the base and gave a structure with a mushroom appearance.

Today, they are used for decorative pieces in the garden and are effective as a centrepiece. They can often be seen to line a driveway to create an impact at the entrance of a property.
