Here at UKAA we try to purchase the best quality reclaimed refurbished door and window furniture, from door knobs and latches to bell pulls.

Antique Door Furniture was made mainly out of brass and would have been hand made using cast moulds in foundries. Iron work was also popular and this would have been made by the local blacksmith in the village.

You can often pick up nice single pieces of antique reclaimed door furniture. Old antique door furniture is nice and heavy and would be made from solid brass and would not have been lacquered. A nice door knocker will often be worn in certain areas from being handled in a certain position over many years. It will often feel smooth to the touch. Women would have cleaned door furniture especially front doors on a weekly basis at the same time as scrubbing the door steps. Middle class properties would have had smart door furniture as a sign of wealth. The regular cleaning would have contributed to the patina of the item. As a purist I think if we could get enough of the old antique and reclaimed door furniture I think we would however as it often the case it just isn’t available and so we have had to go down the reproduction route.

Long before the doorbell, homeowners hung door knockers on their entrance doors. Door knockers have a long history -- they have probably existed as long as houses have had doors -- but it wasn't until the Middle Ages that door knockers became a fanciful house accessory. Obviously, the purpose of a door knocker is to allow a guest the opportunity to announce his presence. During the superstitious Middle Ages, door knockers took on gruesome faces, such as gargoyles, dogs and lions, to ward off evil spirits from entering the home.

The doctor’s door knocker got its name from the Victorian times when the Doctor’s house would have had this specific style knocker on his door and people would be able to recognize the doctor’s house from the door knocker alone. Thus it is now known as the ‘Doctors door knocker’

The dilemma therefore is to find an alternative but it has to be of the highest quality. UKAA have managed to source this after years of searching.
